    Isn’t there a “past imperfect” tense, along with “present imperfect” and “future imperfect?”

    Maybe if we could speak using those tenses, we wouldn’t need that extra foot. (If we had an extra foot, we’d probably stumble even more!)

      Barry, sorry it has taken so long to respond to your comments. Bizzy with work, mind hoping in a lot of places. I do like past imperfect much better – helps to have the language not idealize the past. Because, yes, it were very very imperfect. I looked up the definition which is very intriguing “In English, it refers to the tense of a verb for an action or a condition as incomplete, continuous, or coincident with another action.” That spun my mind off in a few more directions. Thanks!
